Insufficient Funds

Soft Decline
Temporary failures that may succeed on retry
Retryable
This decline may succeed on retry

Description

The cardholder's account does not have enough funds to cover the transaction amount. This is one of the most common decline reasons and is typically temporary.

Recommended Action

Retry after a delay, ideally around the cardholder's typical pay cycle. Visa permits up to 15 reattempts over 30 days.

Common Causes

  • Account balance is below the transaction amount
  • Pending transactions have reduced available balance
  • Credit limit reached on credit cards

Recovery Tips

  • Retry around common pay dates (1st, 15th of the month)
  • Space retries with increasing intervals
  • Try a smaller amount if partial payments are supported
  • Send a payment reminder to the customer
